tomorrow we have declared as 'cherrypicking day'. it is the day before the big italian national holiday so we are inviting for wine and cherries. drink as much wine as you dare while climbing the tree, and all the cherries you can pick are yours.

unfortunately we will be back in sweden for the marrone season, so someone in the village will have to take care of ours

water works

if you go on friday at half past 9 to the water works office to sign the contract they will make you a new connection. That was the message on the sms from flavio, one of the brothers at hydro sanitary and electric services. He sent that message while on holiday in africa, having spoken to his brother earlier. So we went, met two very nice guys from ACDA and with our very broken italian we got ourselves a contract for a new water connection and a new water meter to be installed. The old water meter in the house is leaking so we can't have the water on. And when the company replaces them, they make sure they are outside and accessible for them without having to make an appointment.

Niklas had already dug the hole and found the connection from the communal water pipe to our property, as we had been told we have to do cause the company does no digging they only connect. And we have been told we need to build a little brick box for the connection once it is done. Which won't be such a big problem as we are expert brick builders now. Niklas has also dug the larger part of the trench for the water pipe inside the cellar to connect the communal line to our main. So we are prepared.

but.. piano piano

we were told by one of the charming water work men that after signing the contract on friday, we will have to wait for an invoice to come by mail to our address. Once we have paid that invoice and sent a paper back to the agency, then we will be advised of the day they will start the works to connect us. So now we are wondering if we should close the hole again during the wait or just leave it as is. Maybe need to ask the direttore di lavori for advice.

Kära dagbok...

I morse vaknade jag vid 5-tiden av katt-kören nere på gatan. Det kändes ganska skönt att ligga i vår nya säng och se solen gå upp över bergstopparna i fjärran.
Några timmar senare efter kaffet satt vi i bilen på väg till Ceva och Gran Casa för att göra några inköp. En bäddmadrass, tändvätska, vinglas, kapskivor till vinkelslipen och en spade stod på inköpslistan och som bonus fick vi med oss 50 liter gödsel. Ja dom har verkligen allt på Gran Casa!
Lunchen intog vi i på väg hem i Nucetto. Vi har tänkt oss att prova alla Trattorior längs vägen och nu har vi bockat av ännu en. Den hamnar under kategorin första-och sista-gången.

I eftermiddag har Martina planterat basilika och 2 paprikaplantor och jag har murat 3 skift på Elisabeths vägg... den i badrummet... det blir hur bra som helst!

Ingen Eurovision song contest.. Inget fotboll VM... vad är det som händer och vad gör alliansen?? (Jag har i alla fall lånat en TV av Silvia så jag kommer att kunna se Italiens matcher som visas på Berlusconi-TV!)

disposal

if you think you have seen the picture of the truck before you are right but that was last week, this week we have transported another 4 tons of material, plaster and floor tiles, out of the house. It will be interesting to keep track and in the end do the balance of how many kilos of material went into the house and how many came out.

Meanwhile the cats are watching the works from the balcony opposite and i guess wish they could hang around at the big house. Once the big noise is over and the roof is done, and we move in, then they can stroll around on inside and outside as much as they like.

moonlight serenades

we have been living in casario for a good week now, and by now all the cats in the village know that our two beauties have arrived. we have not let them out free without attendance yet, but still go walks with them so they can get used to the 'hood'. no cats around while we do that but at night in the morning around 4/5 we have cat concert under our balcony. cat serenade. not sure whether the sound they are making are inviting.. like 'come down and play'. or whether they are threatening .. 'wait until we get at you, then we will show you'. time will tell. maybe a little romance here and there?

cat concerts was not the only thing keeping us awake at night, the bed that came with this rental might have also played a role. But today we got the new bed and mattress so heavenly sleep is awaiting us tonight, we believe.

construction going on

you know it is going to be a good day when the delivery man from edile magazzino comes in the morning. Around nine he has made his way up the serpentines to our house with his little red truck, 5 minutes later he has delivered a pallet of stones. He is always wearing a smile, and probably is quite happy with his job.

25 minutes after delivery the stones are in the house, carried in there by niklas and martina ready to become part of the construction.

Today it has been very windy, almost stormy and together with the warm temperatures it is drying out the ground a lot. So we'll have to water our sallad quite a bit tonight when the sun has gone down. Luckily there is no shortage of water here in this area

Vinden har vänt!

Kan vi säga att vi har haft en tuff början? Byggentreprenören har som bekant fått ge upp. För någon dag sedan meddelade även vår käre geometra Mr Patetta att han kastar in handduken. Jag generaliserar inte eller drar alla italienska män över en kam men jag tror att det i båda fallen handlade om förlorad stolthet. Vi ska inte gå in närmare på det utan nu blickar vi framåt!

Följande spelare är uttagna till nästa match:

Martina. En snabblärd "rockie" som visat sig duktig med både murarslev och vinkelslip. Dessutom en oumbärlig pådrivare.

Niklas. Kan lite om mycket och är orädd för att prova nya saker. Hur svårt kan det va?

Felice. Byggentreprenör. Ett nyförvärv. Påminner om forne brottaren Mikael Ljungberg. Ett energiskt kraftpaket!

Paolo. För dagen ytterligare ett nyförvärv. Geometra eller directore di lavore. Kommer att agera i bakgrunden men också som spelande tränare.

En på papperet tunn trupp kanske men min övertygelse är att det är ett vinnande lag!

hay day

and suddenly it is summer. niklas almost got a sunsting this afternoon when he was digging for the main water line so the people from the water company can set a new counter. Our little rental is very sunny and today the grass next door was cut, so now the cats have a playing field. niklas has now done almost all demolition work in the upper floor and i have started to fill two doors with lovely bricks. we eat sallad from the garden which now is growing so fast it is almost scary. The cherries are starting to change colour and hopefully for niklas birthday they will be ripe.

I Italien äter man inte frukost. Bor man på Bed & Breakfast får man absolut en skön säng att sova i men man får f-n ingen frukost. En kopp kaffe och en bit sockerkaka eller dyl möjligen.

Då är luncherna bättre. En vardagslunch består alltid av en primi(första)som kan vara en pasta eller soppa, secondi (andra) som oftast är nåt kött av nåt slag och dolce som är efterrätt. Sen en kopp kaffe såklart.

Söndagsluncherna är ännu bättre. Då lägger man till anti-pasti som förrätt, eller förrätter snarare. I dag slumpade det sig så att vi åt lunch på Trattoria Regina i Ormea. Lunchen serveras där 13.00 på söndagar. Alla sätter sig samtigt och alla serveras samma mat. Det man vill dricka till får man själv bestämma.

Först fick vi en liten papperspåse innehållande nybakt bröd på bordet. Sedan serverades i nämnd ordning:

dangerous animals in italy? i had asked about vipers and stuff, and then today when i was doing some admin work i found a scorpion in the office box. Ok, this is a very unsharp picture but imagine our excitement. Niklas took it out with some kitchen spoons and last we saw it it was walking down the street in casario looking for a good time..

stoned

after having sat on the balcony yesterday early evening and drinking prosecco for the whole village to see us, today we impressed all those that drove by (=everybody from the village) with hard hard work. We had a delivery of stones for the heart of the house, the future heating room. It is in the cellar and has a dirt floor. After having dug out and transported away a lot of it, today was the day to fill it up with clean stones. They will be the base for the cement floor we will be pouring later on.

The stones were delivered at about 3pm, it was one and a half cubic meters, which weigh maybe two tons. Dumped on the street outside of the house. Believe me they don't look like little diamonds anymore when in a heap on the street. We shovelled them all, and i mean down to the last stone, into a cart and 50 meters across the courtyard and into the house and down into the cellar via a gangway. 2 tons two people two hours, one shovelling (me) one carting (niklas). And we even got a bit of suntan as a bonus.

We invited Silvia for a friday evening drink and she brought with her the local fish delicacy.. smoked trout from the tanaro river. The valley below is the High Tanaro Valley and named after the Tanaro river. It was fabulous. We did not bring the fishing gear, maybe the first visitor from stockholm can help us out..

Första natten i Casario!

Så vi har flyttat! Bort från den ganska mörka lägenheten i Garessio nere i dalen där vi tände lampan klockan 18, till soliga, ljusa Casario på 650 meters höjd.. Klockan när detta skrivs är 19.10, vi sitter på balkongen i solen och begrundar dagen och beundrar utsikten. Jo den är fin, kolla själva! Katterna har varit ute i gräset en sväng men ligger just nu och sover. Dom börjar fatta vad det var vi pratade om hur fint det skulle bli i Italien!

ventilated roofs

today we went to the place where they saw the wood for our roof and we got to see the system in a showpiece and we also got a rundown of all the different choices of materials. it was great to have silvia with us who could translate, but the funniest part was when the second best insulation material (the best is cork from cork oaks apparently) was presented and she said that 'it is a kind of fabric' and when we looked it up in the dictionary it was hemp and i started to laugh and the italian word for it is close to 'cannabis' and they all stared at me. I have lived in Amsterdam for too long..

The system of the roofing is a little different from Sweden, here they insulate the roof in Sweden they insulate the house. When we told Felice that we will have 3 glass windows coming he was first a bit puzzled and asked why 3? we hope he will find it interesting to install them.

On the other hand, when we came home we had a mail from Patetta our geometra, who for reasons that are completely beyond us wants to end his working relationship with us. Something to dig into tomorrow ..

Entrén

Vårt hus är tillbyggt ett antal gånger under årens lopp. I den ursprungliga delen har det en gång i tiden varit en tobaksaffär. Då pratar vi om början av 1900- talet, så huset är gammalt... I den här delen är det också ganska lågt till tak så vi har bestämt oss för att riva mellanbjälklaget (golvet i våningen ovanför) och på så sätt få dubbel takhöjd. Väggarna är som alla andra av sten och beklädda med ett antal lager puts som spruckit här och där så vi rensar bort all gammal puts, ett hårt jobb kan jag lova. Sen fäller vi in el-rör och -dosor innan vi sätter putsnät och putsar väggarna fina igen. Vi kan redan se vilken fantastiskt fin entré det kommer att bli och Martina har pekat ut vart hon vill hänga en stor tavla.. det är väl lite tidigt att hänga tavlor men bra att veta när man ska planera belysning.. De två första bilderna är gamla och den tredje är tagen idag med bjälklaget och nästan all puts borta. Bara taket kvar.. puh!! Fönstren? De ska bytas så klart och kommer såsmåningom med lastbil från Svezia..

we have rebooted ..

today we had a big day. we started with meeting Sandro, and we came to an agreement. Noone is happy, but we have closure now and can move on.

Then we filled up one small truck with debris from the house, and it was full, the pic is the second one we filled in the afternoon and it is only half full.

At lunchtime we spoke again with one of our potentially new professional helpers and we came to an agreement we hopefully can sign on wednesday. Then we filled up another half truck and called it a day. Tomorrow we have another half truck worth of debris to be carried from the cellar. No need for a gym neither today or tomorrow, that quota is well filled.

The weather is absolutely gorgeous and we long to move to the little apartment opposite of our house with the evening sun on the balcony. There is just a little water valve in the bathroom to be fixed.. by the son of the owners. He apparently is a plumber and had promised to fix it for a long time but downprioritized because noone lived there, so hopefully it will happen soon. Lets just not get trapped in another 'tomorrow' story.

All in all it feels like we are restarting.

sunday tour to turin

and how pathetic are we.. on our free day we have nothing better to do than to drive to .. IKEA. The nearest one is in Turin, a good hour drive with the car, and with a fantastic panorama of the alps almost all the way.

It was not really so that we could not live a day longer than six weeks without the swedish meatballs. But the reason was that we need a new bed for the little apartment we rented and we thought that we could find either a good mattress with inbuilt frame or a good sofa bed. But NO. we came home with nothing but a box of candles (sounds familiar?) and a few other items that we will find useful in either house, the soon to be rental and then afterwards our own. Ikeas are frighteningly similar in italy from in sweden, but the expert will be able to spot the differences..

We solved the mattress and bed issue locally in the end, and as soon as the water is fixed in the little apartment, we will move up.

Tomorrow morning we will have another meeting with Sandro our builder to talk about how to come to closure of our business, hopefully it will be a good meeting. And hopefully we will directly after that make a decision about our new constructor. So maybe we will get a roof over our heads before the summer is over. Has it really started? Today it was nice and warm and the forecast is good, people hope that the bad weather spell is broken and summer is coming. It would be good if it would stop raining on the leaking roof and the house could start drying out..

On the schedule for tomorrow is to get a lot of the accumulated plaster rests and all the stuff we broke down in the house away to the local recycling place.

Mannen vi hyr vår lägenhet i Garessio av heter Simone. Det är en trevlig diversearbetare som kan 2 ord på svenska. Saltspridare och Skål! Saltspridare eftersom han har en saltspridare och på vintern kör en saltspridare och det verkar som det är en svensk uppfinning, och skål eftersom... ja det fattar ni nog..

Han bor mittimellan Garessio och Casario. Vi stannade till där idag på väg till Casario och efter ett glas Moscato fick vi en rundvandring i hans 3000 kvm nöjespark för "stora-leksaker-för-stora-killar". Där fanns ett flertal bilar och motorcyklar i orginalskick från 60-talet. Dessutom en massa skrotbilar, nån kran, lastbilar, mera skrot och bråte.. -Jasså du renoverar bilar och säljer dom frågade jag. -Nja, svarade Simone. Just den där vill jag nog behålla. Och den där också, den är ju speciell. Och kanske den där...
Tur att han har en stor plats att samla skrot på Simone... och stora drömmar..

Vi flyttar!

Igår när vi åt lunch med vår nya vän Silvia frågade vi om hon visste om det finns något rum eller hus att hyra i Casario. Vi har så smått insett att det inte blir så komfortabelt att flytta in i vårt hus med läckande tak, utan fönster, byggdamm mm.
-Ja, det lilla huset mitt emot ert står tomt, men det är litet... Jag kan ringa och fråga?

Idag tittade vi i huset och det blir helt perfekt till oss så vi gjorde affär. Månadskostnaden är billig och huset är dessutom till salu! Ett sovrum, kök, litet badrum, garage/verkstad (Boel??) Det är det lilla huset framför det vita där på bilden.. Balkong med kvällssol och allt.. Och det är en gammal bild. Grannen har inte varit och köpt vin igen!

Vi har också träffat Sandro idag. Vi har så klart några ouppklarade affärer med honom. Det kändes bra att via tolk tala ut med honom och försöka komma till ett avslut så vi kan börja om med någon annan. Det är nog en bit kvar till ett handslag men det kommer kanske...

ray of hope maybe

today was a good day. one of our neighbours, silvia, speaks very good english and met us yesterday in the street and asked how the project was going, and niklas told her that we had a serious problem because we had just lost our building contractor. in no time she had us at her table with lunch and she like a whirlwind called everyone she knew was a good builder, with the help of another of our neighbours who in fact is a builder, had we known this from the start we would have worked with him for sure. but it takes a while to find out the gems that live close to you and to build a network is a difficult chore.

anyway, now we have two new companies who will give us an offer for our roof and i swear to buy a case of very nice wine for silvia if her calls today will lead to a great job on our house.

Det finns hopp trots allt. Visst, vår byggentreprenör har hoppat av eller fått sparken. Det blir nog en definitionsfråga vad det lider...
Men vårt arbete inomhus går över förväntan. Jag menar.. hur många har putsat en nymurad tegelvägg i sina liv? Först har hon murat väggen genom att med egenblandad (sand+cement+kalk+vatten) (jasså finns det färdigt att köpa?) cement sammanfoga ungefär 250 st tegelstegar.. Sen träget smetat ett jämt lager av, samma ingredienser men med en annan blandning, puts. Hur många har gjort det sa jag? Jag vet en... mi companione Martina... the best..(and the only one for the moment) I assure you!

how to spoil a perfect glass of water

Garessio, where we have rented a little apartment for the month of april and may (20 days to moving into the house in Casario!), is home to a mineral water called san bernardo. the water to the tap is the same, so the communal water is very good. But you can still buy about 13 varieties of bottled water in the shops and people apparently do. Now we like tap water but at home in sweden we have a little apparatus with our very own carbon sink, a little carbonator. A bottle of CO2 goes a long way. Especially for a saturday dinner i think it is a little luxurious to have bubbly tap. But we had not seen any such apparatus here, the only think we saw was little sachets in the supermarket which promised to do the same job. Produced by the same company that makes nutella. I tried it and i can promise it it the most vile taste i had in my mouth in a loooong time. It tastes a little like those headache pills that you can dilute in water and drink. My only comment.. don't try this at home.. be warned!!

Italia - no problems

Vi spelar på bortaplan. Kanske har vi slängt yxan i sjön, hämtat den och slängt i den igen, gapat efter för mycket och sen har vi skitit i det blå skåpet. Vi har gjort slut med vår byggentreprenör det är vad vi har gjort..

Vi har varit här i sex veckor snart. Tanken var att taket skulle vara klart när vi kom hit men det liknar mer och mer sagan om tumme-tott. Från att: -Självklart är det klart i April när ni kommer. Till: - Ja, ställningen är i allafall klar och taket en god bit på väg, sitter vi nu här och konstaterar att visst finns det en ställning och visst finns det en kran efter mycket om och men, men inte en enda arbetande man eller kvinna som utnyttjar något av dem. Den som har läst vet att byggentreprenören har/har haft hjärtproblem efter att ha haft influensa. Idag var vi, (jag vet inte i vilken tur i ordningen) lovade att "arbetare" skulle vara på plats men icke. Därför gjorde vi slut. Vi sa: Kommer du inte inte imorgon tisdag så kan du hämta din ställning och din kran! Ja vi sa sa det via vår tolk och som svar fick vi att: Kan vi inte förstå eventuella problem med hans hälsa och med vädret ( idag solsken och 14C) så ville han inte heller va med..

Det här var inget jag tänkte skriva om ikväll förens jag såg texten på kartan som ligger här på bordet.. Read it and weep!

exporting swedish traditions to italy

today niklas worked on the 'niklas wall' the wall that is separating the two bathrooms upstairs, and i was doing material testing. We want to insulate a few walls inside and wanted to make sure we can put plaster on them easily. The test was successful.

the daily check in our little garden resulted in this pic of our sallad, but the japanese pumpkins are doing really well as well. the basil is still dead. only a miracle will be able to get it to grow again.

Then we came to the pleasant chore of the day, teach italian girls some swedish handicraft. Ettores twins were interested to learn how to make flower crowns and they brought a friend. I am not sure the city of Garessio will have any flowers standing after tonight, they were each on their third crown when we left them..

Il tetto, Taket

Det som tidigare kändes som ett omöjligt uppdrag känns nu, tack vare ställningen, fullt möjligt. Taket måste läggas om. Det läcker och innan det är bytt vill vi inte göra allt för mycket inomhus som kan riskera att förstöras av regn. Takpannorna ska plockas av, "brädorna" som pannorna ligger på ska tas bort, några takstolar ska bytas och skorstenar ska tätas. Huset är ganska högt och ligger i en sluttning så den högsta punkten är säkert 15 meter över mark. Dit vill man inte klättra utan byggnadställning men dit kunde vi gå idag utan problem.
Eftersom vi räknar med att flytta in om provisoriskt om 3 veckor vore det skönt om taket är tätt, så vi ger honom en vecka att bli frisk tror jag. Sandro, byggentreprenören. Sen lägger vi om taket själva! :-)

Ställning på plats

Vissa dar är bättre än andra. Så är det ju. Efter några mindre bra dagar med motgångar som att byggentreprenören får hjärtproblem och blir inlagd på sjukhus blev idag en ganska bra dag. Ärligt talat hade vi inte så stora förhoppningar om att ställningsbyggarna skulle komma idag eftersom regnet hängde i luften. Har man utejobb och det regnar så stannar man hemma.. så är det bara.. basta! Undrar vem som bestämmer det föresten.. lagbasen kanske.. han kikar ut genom fönsterluckan på morgonkvisten och ser de mörka molnen.. nja... vi stannar hemma idag tänker han och så startar han telefonkedjan.. Eller också ringer han bara om det blir jobb.. så borde det va.. det skulle bli billigare för då behöver han inte ringa så ofta.. :-)

Förvånade blev vi, eller snarare glatt överaskade när vi anlände till Casario i morse och det va full fart med raskt arbetande ställningsbyggare som smidigt klättrade runt huset.. När vi åkte hemmåt straxt efter 4 i eftermiddags var dom kvar och nästan klara! När ställningen är klar är det meningen att takarbetena ska börja. På måndag kanske, om byggentreprenören kvicknar till..

don't even think about work when its raining

checking the weather forecast for Casario has become an obsession of ours and it looks like it will be raining all week this week, at least on and off. That means there will be no construction workers coming, nor will they work anywhere else. Same goes for the guys who are putting up the scaffolding. We would have inside jobs to do but that is a whole different story.

The building site is deserted and we are on our own. This of course is a subject of big distress to us, but we are also discussing how much would get done in Sweden if people would stay home when it rains? And we don't assume that people here have contracts that give them pay even if they are staying home because of bad weather. So how do they feed themselves and their families if they don't work for a whole week in a row? questions and questions

On a positive note, we got two proposals for our bathroom from our friend Elisabeth today. Both look good and obviously have each their advantages. We will mull over them a bit.. not that we are anywhere close to going bathtub shopping.. :-) but good to be prepared..
