solar power yes please

Today was the day when the water tank was filled and the solar system started. We had high expectations and once the last preparations were done we brought up the vacuum tubes and watched how they were inserted one by one.

Next move was to check the panel and see how fast the 500 l of water in the tank are warming up by the power of the sun. And watched the temperature rise..

Not that we have anything to warm yet, the floor heating will be installed the 18th and with current temperatures one does not need heating, and the showers are not done so we can’t use any hot water yet.

Maybe we should get out the very large wine barrel that I disassembled and stacked away numbered and all last year. Make a proper Nordic outside bath event, invite the neighbours.

an UFO has landed

In order to prepare the ground so to say for our future vegetable patch down at our piece of land, we have not only cleared the vines, but also cut the grass and laid out a 4x7m piece of tarpaulin. Covered it with stones so it won't fly away in the autumn storms. This cover is supposed to be there for a season or two, and the idea is that when we take it off, the ground will be well nutrified and free of unwanted weeds and that the cover increases the natural metabolism. It certainly looks spectacular from above when one comes down the slope, and the neighbours are surely now thinking we are odd to say the least. Noone has said or asked anything about it yet, but i am sure that they are talking about it. Maybe they think we are up to some high tech engineering of the ground, when this is as low tech as you can get..

outside sitting area

In a spate of complete overoptimism, we bought a hammock last year. We also got another one as present from our fabulous friend Ursula. And under the wine pergola we have set up a little primitive sitting bench. It is not really such a joy to sit there though, as I have used the space beneath the hammock for old and dry plant material (in order to get a little more organic material into the soil for future plantings). In addition, there is a pile of old beams from the old roof that is lying there. Once we have put up the tubes into the solar system, we have extra space in the little former chestnut drying house. And then we can pretend we have a relax area.

playing with fire

Maybe there is a little pyromaniac in me, i did in any case not expect it to be so fun to burn the vines and small branches in the piece of land that is to be our vegetable and fruit tree patch.

It could of course be that the satisfaction stems from the fact that lots of sweat was running down my forehead and my back in order to get these vines and blackberry hedges into the neat piles.

The vines are vicious, they take hold of a tree and then they smother it to death in just a few years. The blackberry hedges seem to be assistants to those vines but not do any damage themselves, just make it a bit harder to get to the trees and bushes to free them from the killers.

Not that I think the plants deserve to burn.. it is just the most convenient measure since the cows don’t like to eat it and it is too much to compost for next year. So we fire away a pile a day and sometimes even two.

Mr Sandman

carpentry job

Internet is fabulous. I had as task to build a sawhorse (what a funny name I had to look it up) for all the trees that did not survive the attack of the killer vines. Not to mention the logs from the old roof that are now spread around the property little here and there.

Niklas looked up a construction instruction for me on the web and this morning I rummaged in the pile of leftover construction material. Once I had found all the things i was looking for I got to use the circular saw for the first time in my life. Finally screwed the bits together. Not the best looking horse in town, but Niklas thinks it will do the job. And I am mighty proud of myself. Plus it was a nice change to the cement jobs..

Not that we will use the sewn up wood in our fireplace yet, as the fireplace is not installed yet but as they say here in italy .. piano piano.. one thing at a time
